Shimoni slave caves
For the most memorable part, the ancient coral caves of Shimoni served as a pen in which over 1
million slaves would wait before being shipped to the slave market in Zanzibar, Tanzania &
onwards to Yemen between 1860 and 1895.
It is believed that the slaves were held here for 2-3 weeks, before being packed in dhows – up to
1000 at a time. As many as 400 died during that voyage and were thrown overboard to be eaten by sharks.
Accomodation- Prideinn Diani
A really really special space, where the river meets the sea in the most calming way. The
river goes through a mangrove forest and passes by a Digo village. Enjoy the mangrove
forest as we sail through the waters, meet the villagers and watch the sun set over the
mangrove creeks. You can choose to also go for a swim in the river or clear seas – or both if
the tide is right! Learn about the unique ecosystem and birdlife from the locals themselves.
Swimming costumes would be helpful if you want a dip, apart from that sit back and enjoy
the ultimate ride.
